Mahalia Jackson

October 26, 1911 to January 27, 1972

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 26, 1911, Mahalia Jackson started singing at Mount Moriah Baptist Church as a young girl and went on to represent a new sound in African American Spirituals called gospel music. 

Her voice is legendary it represented the very core of negro spirituals moving into the civil rights era.
